Cheek-O Dread

Born in Kenya in the mid seventies, Cheek-O Dread (who’s “officially” known as Enrico Ssewalula) has spent most of his life travelling the world and always taking a sabbatical in his new home land Tanzania.
Cheek-O Dread’s musical influence started early with singing in the church choir and musical competitions in Tanzania as well as his listening to of as many records and tapes he could get his hands on based on his mother’s avid love of music.

Cheek-O Dread actively started DJing in the early nineties as a pastime while perfecting his skill.

His main genre’s at this point were Hip-Hop/R&B and Bashment/Dancehall.
With his move to the States to further his studies he got deeper into the music scene playing at various haunts in DC from Serengeti, to Kilimanjaro, Tyson’s in Georgetown and finally landing himself a promoter’s night at the then prestigious Club Zei, on which night he would DJ too.

On returning to his home in East Africa in the late nineties, he landed a residency as the head resident at Mamba Disco both in Nairobi & Mombasa where his love for dance music was found a new. All the while he was occasionally called upon to play at most of the leading clubs in Kampala, Nairobi, Zanzibar and Dar Es Salaam from Angénoir, to Club Silk, The Carnivore, Choices, Bilicanas, Bwawani, The Garage just to mention a few.
During this period he also worked in various roles in the entertainment and media industries from Copywriter, to A/V Producer, Promoter, Event Coordinator, Back Ground Vocalist and also producing numerous radio and TV commercials and jingles.

He moved to Dubai in 2007 and quickly set about getting to understand the scene. In this period he availed himself as a private DJ for hire for house parties and do’s.
He has since become one of the main appearances on Plan B’s HoneyTrap Night where he plays everything commercial and is also called upon to play at private functions at the club who’s clients are house-a-natics.
Cheek-O Dread is also heavily involved in organizing events locally that involve artists from Africa having already worked on two successful ones in the past 4 months and currently putting together another two slated for the month of December 2009.

During his free time Cheek-O Dread does mixes at home that he posts on his fan page on Facebook and is also working on a series of his own house tracks.
His main genre’s are House and Dancehall.
